The Dream
Oh the dream! It's hard to point exactly to where it all began, but I have 2 major insights. Who remembers the computer game called The Sims? I started playing at my father's house in the summers and loved those games! I now realize that what I really liked was building new homes, buying and placing furniture, and redecorating.
I am also a bargain shopper. The thrill of a good deal and the challenge of finding a gem has always drawn me to discount stores. Years ago, maybe 15, I came across a set of computer CDs to design your own home by HGTV. I'm guessing that's where this whole thing got really started. For years off and on, I'd play with designing my dream home. It's was better than The Sims but much slower and challenging as you placed each wall, window, floor and ceiling. Even better though as there were no little people to send to the bathroom, the bed, or the kitchen. Just planning a space that could be lived in. (Over and over again).
At first, it was an activity for down time, usually while watching TV. I'd try all kinds of layouts and they inevitably would end up ~6,000 square feet too large and not be anything I'd actually feel comfortable inside. As life moved along, I bought my first and current house. That gave a bunch of perspective. I've lived here for almost 13 years! It was supposed to be my starter home. Somehow, I've survived in less than 2,000 sq feet all these years and I've gained perspective about what works and what I'd change if I could.
Now this dream is coming alive. Those drawings, they are in the hands of builders and I'm going to be closing on my homesite shortly. It's the most exciting and scary time in my life thus far.
